Heathrow Airport: Best Greek islands for a family holiday including travel rules

The Greek islands are sparkling gems in the Mediterranean sea, with there crystal clear water and white sand, it’s no wonder why people flock from all over the world to soak up the idyllic setting. However, with the school holidays fast approaching, many are looking for a place to venture out to with the little ones, and with the Greek islands hosting everything from honeymoon destinations to party islands, it can be hard to sift through which ones are best.

With the beautiful weather, delicious food and picturesque towns, it is no surprise that the Greek islands offer an escape from the humdrum of the nine to five city life. But when you have kids in tow, which offer the best all-round family experience?

With the entry rules to Greece relaxed now, people, regardless of vaccination status, can travel to Greece hassle-free. Visitors do not need to show proof of Covid vaccination nor a negative Covid test or certificate of recovery from Covid. You also do not need to complete a passenger locator form. However, people are still expected to wear a mask on public transport.

1. Naxos

Featuring miles of power sands, this island offers a haven to kids who want to run around in the sun and build sand fortresses all day, whilst the parents lounge in the background. Specifically, Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna feature shallow waters, kids can splash about in the water without any fear of the water taking a deep, unexpected plunge. With beach bars lining these shallow shores, you can relax and also feed the little ones without having to peel everyone away from the beach.

For those with teenagers or more adventurous kids, on the other side of the island, you can find wilder beaches where you can enjoy a range of water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing. If you get bored of the crystal waters, you can head inland with many walking trails and quaint villages to explore, you can sample the local delicacies and roam the island.

2. Crete

Greece’s biggest island has something for everyone, from rambling adventures to late-night partying, this island is the best ‘all-rounder’. Having said that, it is great for families that love exploring and don’t mind a car journey. If you love a good road trip then Crete is the perfect island to explore. Venture West for villages surrounded by olive groves and orange trees or go to the South to scope out the sprawling sandy beaches.

If you are a history or mythology buff, look no further, with thousands of different settlers coming and going, create is layered with an interesting past, not to mention the god Zeus was born there. If you want to venture even further, you can take a day trip to one of the tiny islands off Crete’s coast and visit a seaside paradise surrounded by blue waters.

3. Lefkada

Getting to islands can usually be a bit of a task, with ferries and boats or small, turbulence-prone aeroplanes being among your only options – none of which sit very well with the little ones. However, this island cuts out all that hassle. It is accessible from the mainland via a causeway, so you can get there in the comfort of your own car, which also saves a pretty penny when travelling with a family.

With island being prone to wind and thus wavey beaches, Lefkada has some well-sheltered spots that allow the kids to enjoy the water without any fear of crashing waves. However, if you were looking for a decent swell, you can head to the south coast for a bit of windsurfing – it is actually home to the world windsurfing competitions.
